Exemption certificates
Exemption certificates release the owner of a property or land from the need to get approval for assessable development. They are only issued in exceptional circumstances.
An exemption certificate deals with the inappropriate categorisation of development or if the effect of a proposed development is considered to be inconsequential.
The exemption certificate has effect for two years from the issue date, or a later day stated in the certificate.

Where an exemption certificate is given, the decision maker is required to publish a notice about that decision that states the reasons for giving the certificate. Only local governments and the departments chief executive can issue an exemption certificate.
